about this event
“Sometimes you see him, and sometimes you don't. It’s just as he pleases, I think: he's there, but he has some power over your eyes...”
One man. An armchair. A glass of whisky. The glow of candlelight in a darkened room. And two ghost stories by M R James: Lost Hearts features one of his most memorable black magicians, the predatory scholar Mr Abney, whereas A Warning to the Curious is perhaps the author’s most poignant tale in which a young antiquary is haunted and hunted by the guardian of an ancient treasure.
The supernatural tales of M R James (1862 – 1936) are widely regarded as the finest ever written and, over a century after their first publication, they’ve lost none of their power to terrify and amuse. James first wrote them to perform to friends in King’s College, Cambridge, in the years leading up to World War One. Nunkie Theatre Company has revived this tradition, bringing many of the eeriest and most entertaining back to life in this critically acclaimed one-man show.
‘Remarkable. Lloyd Parry is a natural storyteller, well able to hold, amuse and frighten his audience’ – The Stage
‘Wonderful, magical storytelling. A pleasing reminder that the spoken word can be as spine-chilling as anything in the cinema’ – Daily Mail
