about this event
Joelle Tamraz was barely past twenty when she travelled to India in search of spiritual knowledge. In Rishikesh, the home of yoga, she met an alluring older man who offered to teach her a secret practice. This encounter locked her into a controlling and manipulative relationship for the next 18 years. And unfortunately, her experience is far from unique.
The promises of spiritual yoga can be seductive, particularly to the vulnerable and young people who are searching for something more in their lives. But in the wrong hands it can be used to influence and control. The Secret Practice: Eighteen Years on the Dark Side of Yoga, published in August 2023, is the shocking true story of her 18-year ordeal under the control of a master manipulator. Joelle was controlled emotionally, financially, socially and physically until she managed to break free from my living nightmare.
Her talk, featuring photos from the time, focuses on how she fell prey to and awoke from deception and mind control. She will also discuss what she learned from her experience and how writing and publishing her memoir was central to her healing.
Daniella Mestyanek Young, cult scholar and author of Uncultured, called the book “phenomenal’.
It will be available at Cranleigh Arts during the Literary Festival and can also be purchased from Amazon or ordered from local bookshops. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Secret-Practice-Eighteen-Years-Memoir/dp/1739377702
Her story has been featured in the Daily Mail Inspire section https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-12792963/My-yogi-husband-slept-young-woman-told-theyd-lovers-past-life.html
